A Detroit engineer and lieutenant have been suspended without pay after accusations of drinking at a bar led to an investigation.
The investigation was prompted after the crew of Engine 48 drove their engine over three miles from their station to a bar in Melvindale to celebrate a crew member's transfer on Feb. 11.
A police officer from Melvindale was dispatched to the bar for a disorderly conduct call and in his report he said the firefighters didn’t appear intoxicated and there was no alcohol on the table, according to WDIV Local 4.
Detroit officials found out about the incident and conducted drug and alcohol tests on the crew members.
The engineer's test came back with alcohol in his system, the lieutenant’s test came back inconclusive.
“I’m not gonna tolerate that. Like I said before, we gotta do what’s best for the citizens of Detroit and if we have a member that’s intoxicated while at work, that’s not benefitting the citizens of Detroit," Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms told the television station.
